The Detroit Red Wings' bid to improve via free agency has become more challenging after Alex Tuch's sign-and-trade deal with the Washington Capitals.
The Buffalo Sabres dealt forward Alex Tuch to the Washington Capitals on June 24 in a sign-and-trade that netted Tuch an eight-year, $84 million deal.
The Sabres received David Kampf and a third-round pick in return for the 30-year-old Tuch.
This move makes it harder for the Detroit Red Wings to improve through free agency, as Tuch was the top prize this summer.
The Wings are still dealing with figuring out what to do with captain Dylan Larkin, who has requested a trade to a contender.
Larkin, who turns 30 on July 30, has a no-trade clause, giving him a say in where he lands.
The NHL draft is this weekend, and free agency begins July 1, but the Wings do not have a first-round pick.
They used that to acquire top-four defenseman Justin Faulk from the St. Louis Blues at the trade deadline.
The Detroit Red Wings currently stand 10th in the Eastern Conference with a 41-31 record, on a L3 streak.
And with Tuch gone, the market is even thinner, making it tougher for the Wings to find a suitable replacement.
But General manager Steve Yzerman is not obligated to trade Larkin, a consistent 30-goal scorer under contract for five more seasons.
The Wings would need to get someone like Larkin in return, a forward who can center the top line and play both special teams.
So the Wings have power in trade negotiations, but they need to make the right move to improve their chances.
The Detroit Red Wings' fans are eagerly waiting to see what the team will do next to improve their roster.
