The Detroit Red Wings are likely to sign a veteran goalie to support young Michal Postava.
Detroit Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman wants an insurance policy between the posts.
The team's development staff is impressed with Postava's work, but Yzerman won't leave a position open for a younger player.
Postava had a 1.71 GAA and a .937 save percentage in 25 AHL games.
Yzerman wants a goalie who can play regularly in the NHL, but also be comfortable in the AHL, serving as a mentor to incoming rookie Trey Augustine.
The Detroit Red Wings stand 10th in the Eastern Conference, with a 41-31 record, on a L3 streak.
Yzerman is familiar with a few goalies on the UFA list, including Eric Comrie, who played three games for the Red Wings in 2019-20.
Comrie also has 11 seasons of AHL experience, making him a viable option.
Pheonix Copley is another veteran AHL goalie with 78 NHL games on his resume.
Every goalie listed, except Petr Mrazek, made less than $1 million last season.
The Detroit Red Wings will start the season with a goalie tandem, and having a veteran goalie will provide a Plan B if Postava struggles.
And Yzerman will look at all options leading into the free agency period.
But the team's focus is on supporting Postava, who usurped the No. 1 role in Grand Rapids.
So Yzerman will sign a goalie who can play in both the NHL and AHL.
The Detroit Red Wings' standing, 10th in the Eastern Conference, with a 41-31 record, as of June 30, makes the signing of a veteran goalie a priority.
